While team-mate and fellow defender Yamba Asha must sit out the tournament as he serves a nine-month doping suspension, Kali is able to take his place in Germany despite also returning a positive test.

While Asha tested positive as recently as last October, Kali failed his test the previous season and was able to serve out his six-month ban (reduced from nine on appeal) in time to return to the squad in time for the recent African Nations Cup.

By that stage the 27-year-old - whose full name is Carlos Alonso - had played in nine of his country's 12 World Cup qualifiers and as such can be expected to form an integral part of the Angolan backline in Germany, particularly given Asha's absence.

A no-nonsense defender, Kali may be somewhat green at such a high level, but his attitude and approach should earn him plenty of admirers.
