Argentina go into the World Cup as one of the favourites to win it, as they always do.

With a glut of world-class players in every position, except maybe goalkeeper, the 1978 and 1986 winners will be as strong as ever in Germany.

The creative hub of the team is Villarreal's sublime talent Juan Roman Riquelme. His clever passing and dead-ball ability make him perhaps Argentina's most important player.

They also have the latest new 'new Maradona' in Lionel Messi. The young Barcelona forward is of similar build to the great man and, judging by his performances this season, is one of the best young players in world football.

His role in the team at the World Cup is as yet unclear, but he could be the inspiration in attack should Riquelme have an off day, which he frequently does.

Argentina combine a skilful attack with a mean defence and a win-at-all-costs attitude. They will be difficult to beat in Germany and it will take an exceptional team to do it.
