Roberto Ayala has been one of the most talented central defenders playing in Europe for several years now.

And this summer he'll hope to transfer his many qualities to the biggest stage of all.

Ayala is still playing his club football for Valencia in Spain, and helped them to two La Liga titles and the UEFA Cup during the golden era marshalled by one Rafael Benitez.

Once chased by some of Europe's top clubs - including Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool - Ayala is both assured in defence and dangerous in attack from set-pieces.

Before moving to the Mestalla in 2000-2001, Ayala had spells in Italy with both Napoli and AC Milan.

But after leaving the San Siro for Valencia, he proved the cornerstone in the most successful period in the club's history.

May feel he's missed the boat by never taking the chance to leave for a European superpower, but has another opportunity to showcase his talents in Germany.
