A powerful goalscorer Mark Viduka began his professional career with Melbourne FC before leaving his 'homeland' for Croatia Zagreb.

As his parents are Croatian, Viduka has dual nationality and there was some doubt over which country he would choose to represent, but he plumped for Australia and has led their attack ever since.

His move to Celtic in November 1998 was disrupted when he refused to play, blaming stress from his spell in war-torn Croatia. But he came good eventually and won the SPL Player of the Year award for 1999/2000, scoring 27 goals

This form persuaded Leeds to part with £6million for his services and he scored goals consistently as the Yorkshire side enjoyed top-five finishes and reached a Champions League semi-final.

The success didn't last, however, and Viduka was sold to Middlesbrough for £4.5million as Leeds were relegated.

Viduka's ability to hold the ball up and his powerful finishing will be vital if Australia are to progress from a tough group that - in one of the quirks that major tournaments always provide - includes Croatia.
