Julio Baptista started out as a defensive midfielder in the Brazilian league for Sao Paulo, but was converted to a striker after his £1.9million move to Seville in 2003.

It was a success and he scored 20 goals in his first season, helping Seville qualify for the UEFA Cup. He also earned the nickname 'La Bestia' (The Beast) due to his muscular physique and his uncompromising style of play.

In the 2004 Copa America, Brazil left many of their more established stars out of the squad and Baptista seized his chance.

In 2005 it looked like he would sign for Arsenal but Real Madrid came in at the last minute and he signed for £16.9million.

Although he has not been able to secure a starting berth at the Bernabeu and has mainly been used in an attacking-midfield role.

He has become a fixture in the Brazil squad, if not the first team, and at the World Cup will be looking for a glorious end to what has been a difficult first season for at Madrid.
