Position: Midfielder/Forward Marek Heinz's towering frame will provide a useful threat for the Czech Republic should Jan Koller fail to make it to Germany 2006. The versatile forward was a key member of his country's qualifying campaign, scoring two goals in nine games, including one in the crucial 3-0 victory in Finland. The 29-year-old shot to prominence at international level at Euro 2004 with his powerful displays and his man-of-the-match performance in the famous victory over Germany. Heinz's has been somewhat inconsistent since starting out his club career at Sigma Olomouc, where he impressed for four years before earning move to Germany's Hamburg at the turn of the millennium. His time in the Bundesliga was not a success and following a brief stint for Arminia Bielefeld in 2003 he returned to the Czech Republic with Banik Ostrava. Heniz's fortunes soon changed and in the 2003/04 season his incredible 19 goals not only helped his side win their first league title in 23 years but fired him into his country's Euro 2004 side. His lethal finishing and presence in the air attracted the attention of Borussia Monchengladbach, where he currently plays a bit-part role.
