James - can't shift 'Calamity' tag.
13 David James

Position: Goalkeeper
Born: 01.08.70
Club: Manchester City

Vienna and Copenhagen are unlikely to be among David James' top tips for a city break. For it was whilst playing for England in the capitals of Austria and Denmark that the Manchester City goalkeeper put in a pair of poor performances which have ultimately led to him wearing the unlucky 13.

James had taken over the number one jersey from David Seaman following the latter's retirement and had been ever present throughout Euro 2004. But the first qualifier for World Cup 2006 saw James came under fire when he was at fault for Austria's two late goals in a 2-2 draw.

He was replaced by Paul Robinson for the next clash, in Poland, and was then unused until the USA tour games in May 2005. Three months later came England's heavy 4-1 friendly defeat away to Denmark when James, a half time substitute for Robinson, put in an alarmingly woeful display. He later confessed to being 'ill-prepared' for the match.

Although the 35-year-old has not won a cap since, he remains understudy to Robinson largely due to a lack of competition among English keepers. Chris Kirkland's catalogue of injury problems have stalled his international ambitions and Robert Green - capped just once as a substitute - has looked shaky during Norwich's unspectacular Championship campaign.

If called upon in Germany, James should be able to call upon his big-match experience and could even put in one of his occasional superb showings. But conversely, he retains a capacity for calamity, and England will therefore rest easier with him on the bench.
