Huth - maturing.
4 Robert Huth

Position: Defender
Born: 18.08.84
Club: Chelsea

The bright lights of the Premiership have often dazzled Robert Huth but this summer the giant defender has the chance to prove he can perform on this biggest stage of all.

Huth joined Chelsea as a trainee in 2000 from Union Berlin and his impressive progress enabled him to survive at Stamford Bridge despite the arrival of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, whose cash brought in a host of the world's top stars to cover every position.

The strong centre-back, who made his debut for the Blues in 2002, managed to retain his place in the first-team squad although his opportunities, which have been largely restricted to substitute appearances and cup games, have been spoiled by occasional lapses in concentration.

Huth represented Germany in the 2003/2004 World Youth Championship and European U-21 Championship and his continued rise to prominence was rewarded by national coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who called him up for an international friendly with Austria in August 2004.

Still only 21 years of age, the young German can improve on his faults and build on his strengths such as his pace, intimidating presence at the back and powerful shot when joining attacks.

Although Huth has been linked with a range of tip European clubs including Bayern Munich, he is determined to stay with Jose Mourinho's side and will hope that stirring displays at the World Cup will prove he has lasting worth.
