Ghana's chances of qualifying for the second round were dealt a blow when they were drawn with Italy, Czech Republic and the USA.

They will have to be at their best to get anything from this group, but they do have their strengths.

They have a good midfield that includes the most expensive African player ever in Michael Essien, Fenerbahce's Stephen Appiah and Udinese starlet Sulley Ali Muntari.

Appiah is captain, and his energy and ball-winning qualities are similar to Essien's, and make for an imposing central midfield.

Samuel Kuffour will offer experience at centre-back, but the key player for Ghana could be lone striker Matthew Asamoah.

His team have few options in this position and the Vitesse Arnhem man will have to perform if they are to mount a challenge in group E.
