![]() Roy Makaay
Position: Forward Roy Makaay remains one of the most lethal finishers in European football, but thus far he's failed to make a noteworthy mark at international level. The 31-year-old has been prolific in his three years so far at Bayern Munich and was influential in their Bundesliga success this campaign as well as the Bavarian giants' Double success of last season. The Dutch hitman made his name at Deportivo La Coruna in 1999 where his glut of goals fired them to their first ever Primera Liga title. But his best season came in 2002/03 where he found the net a whopping 29 times to claim Europe's prestigious Golden Boot award. Yet despite making his international debut back in 1996 he's never been able to shine on the world stage having been omitted from Holland's France 1998 squad and missing out four years later when the country didn't even qualify. Unfortunately the wealth of Dutch strikers have restricted him to a bit-part role but there is no disputing his star qualities. Nicknamed 'The Phantom' for his ability to score out of nowhere, Makaay is pacy, towering striker and has a deadly shot from inside and outside the area. This summer Makaay has a point to prove to all those Dutch managers who doubted him in the past, but the question remains whether Marco van Basten will give him a place in the spotlight.
