Guy Demel began his career at Nimes in France but was snapped up by Arsene Wenger's Arsenal in 2000.

Despite being a highly-rated talent on his arrival he never broke into the first team at Highbury, and Dortmund signed him in 2002.

He fared better in Germany but was stil only a bit-part player in his three years at Dortmund and signed for Hamburg in 2005, finally getting the regular starts he has been looking for.

Demel has established himself at right-back at his new club, but prefers a defensive midfield role although he can also play at centre-back.

Born in France, Demel decided to represent the homeland of his parents, and he is a valuable squad player for the Elephants.

But with strong players such as Didier Zokora and Emmanuel Eboue in his favoured positions, Demel might find himself watching from the sidelines at the World Cup.
