![]() 4 Rafael Marquez
Position: Defender Rafael Marquez is one of the few Mexicans who have made a significant impact overseas and his success at Barcelona is sure to instil panic in even the most potent strikers this summer. Nicknamed 'Rafa', his formidable figure can either take stock in the heart of the Spanish giants' defence or lurk in a holding midfield role and his imposing performances were a major factor behind Barca's Primera Liga success in 2005 and their dominant title defence. Despite his powerful nature, it is Marquez's delicate side which has won many admirers as his superb touch combined with great vision and confidence when raiding forward enables him to create many attacks for club and country. Marquez had unquestioned talent in his youth and made his international debut at the age of 17 before playing a part in Mexico's Confederations Cup triumph in 1999. His impressive performances in the tournament sparked interest from Monaco, who subsequently swooped to sign him from Mexican side Atlas. 'Rafa' became an instant hit in the Principality and helped them win the Ligue 1 title in his first season and after three successful years with the French side, Marquez moved to the Nou Camp in the summer of 2003 and his transition from a promising youngster to a leading light was almost complete. In the 2002 World Cup the towering defender was given the captain's armband and led Mexico to the last 16. And with over 60 caps to his name, Marquez is very much the finished product and is ready to be the rock upon which Mexico can fulfil their billing as one of the most dangerous dark horses in the tournament.
