Jared Borgetti became the first Mexican ever to play in the English Premiership after joining the continental mix at Bolton Wanderers last summer.

Nicknamed the 'Desert Fox' for his stealthy movement in and around the box, he became Mexico's record goalscorer when he hit the back of the net for the 36th time in internationals against Costa Rica in August.

Borgetti made his full international debut in 1997, but did not feature at France '98.

Since 1999, however, the striker has been an ever-present in the national side and he was a valuble member of Mexico's 2002 World Cup squad.

He scored twice in that tournament including a memorable headed effort in a draw with Italy which took his country through to the last 16.

A dangerous opponent due to his clever off-the-ball runs, swift movement and his calm yet instinctive finishing, Borgetti is equally strong in the air but is more noted for his poaching rather than spectacular shooting.

He started his club career with Atlas before signing for Santos Laguna where he made his name; indeed Borgetti scored an incredible 41 goals in 43 games for the club in 2000 and managed to win two championships and reach two finals in a seven-year spell there.

After leaving in 2004 Borgetti had short spells at Dorados and Pachuca but things failed to work out at both clubs before he put his future on hold to concentrate on the Confederations Cup.

His winner against Brazil and two excellent goals in the semi-final loss to hosts Germany caught the attention of the likes of Hertha Berlin, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bolton, where he eventually landed.

However, despite making an instant impact at the Reebok when he scored a decisive last-minute winner against Lokomotiv Plovdiv in their first-ever UEFA Cup match, he struggled for first-team starts and this could affect his sharpness.
