The hero of Liverpool's Champions League triumph last May, yet Jerzy Dudek has since been cast into the role of understudy after 'Pepe' Reina's arrival.

That is some comedown for the man voted the seventh best goalkeeper in the world by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics in 2005 and it has been no surprise to see Dudek linked with a move away.

Particularly so given his club travails have put a question mark over his role of Poland's No 1. His wealth of experience - Dudek has won over 50 caps - means he would probably be guaranteed the start were he a regular at club level but Celtic's Artur Boruc could well find himself in pole position now.

A tremendous shot-stopper - witness his wonder saves from Andriy Shevchenko in Istanbul - Dudek is generally sound on crosses and is good in one-on-one situations but can be prone to the odd lapse in concentration.

Once memorably described by Leo Beenhakker - his coach at Feyenoord - as "the best goalkeeper I've seen in 30 years" Dudek moved to England from Holland in 2001 and won the Polish Player of the Year award just months later as a reward for his excellent performances for Feyenoord, Liverpool and, of course, Poland.

Failing to get regular first-team football at Anfield this season will therefore be a huge frustration, and it would be no surprise to see him on the move this summer.
