Ricard Carvalho has established himself as one of the world's leading centre-backs in recent years, first in the Porto side that won the UEFA Cup and Champions League, and then at Chelsea after following Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge.

At international level, he was one of the most consistent performers at Euro 2004 as Portugal reached the final before going down 1-0 to surprise champions Greece.

Carvalho came into the side after the opening game and his impressive displays earned him a place in UEFA's All-Star squad of the tournament.

An assured defender both on the deck and in the air, Carvalho has won three league titles in the last three years - two at Porto and one with Chelsea - and will hope to take this success into the international arena this summer.
