Paulo Ferreira will probably feel he has something to prove at the World Cup having endured a miserable Euro 2004.

After being dropped following a mistake in the opening defeat to Greece, Ferreira did not feature again until midway through the final, when Portugal again went down to the Greeks.

Despite this, Jose Mourinho paid £13.2million - a British record fee for a full-back -to bring a player he knew well from their time at Porto to Chelsea.

Since his arrival at Stamford Bridge, Ferreira has establishesd himself as a reliable right-back, making the position his own in Chelsea's cosmopolitan team. Indeed, only a broken foot suffered in an international friendly against Slovakia curtailed his season.

In the 2003/4 season Ferreira was voted best right-back in Europe by his fellow players.

He has never scored a senior goal in his professional career.
