Hugo Viana is an attacking midfielder who can play on the left wing or in the centre, is an expert free-kick taker and a fine passer of the ball.

He started out at Sporting Lisbon where he made an instant impression at a young age and was hailed as the new Luis Figo by the Portuguese media after winning the European Young Player of the Year.

In June 2002 he sealed an £8.5million move to Newcastle but after a promising start he spent long spells on the substitutes' bench.

Towards the end of his second season at St James' Park, an injury to Robert gave him his chance but he failed to impress as he never adjusted to the pace of the Premiership and he subsequently missed out on a Euro 2004 spot.

He went on loan to former club Sporting and found his way back into the national team but the two clubs could not agree a transfer and he found himself on loan again at Valencia for the 2005/2006 season.
