The subject of one of the sub-plots at the last World Cup, Ahn Jung-Hwan is one of the handful of European-based members of the South Korean squad.

At the time of the 2002 Finals, Ahn was playing for Perugia but after he scored the golden goal that gave South Korea victory over Italy, club president Luciano Gaucci said he would not pay the salary of someone who had 'ruined' Italian football.

Ahn was subsequently sold to Shimizu S-Pulse before returning to Europe with Metz last summer and moving on to Germany in January after interest from Blackburn.

A pin-up in the Far East - particularly after marrying former Miss South Korea Lee Hye-Won - Ahn is equally happy in midfield or up front although it is as a striker that he has played most of his 50-plus games for the national side.
