One of the most experienced members of the Spain squad, Ruben Baraja offers a tireless presence in defensive midfield for club and country.

However, Baraja's rise was a steady one. He began his career at Valladolid before earning a move to Atletico Madrid, where he spent a frustrating three years without making an appearance.

Once given a chance, Baraja's competitive spirit and direct style shone in a dismal Atletico side that was relegated in 2000.

The midfielder was not to join the Madrid side in the second tier, though, as Valencia signed him to help replace Gerard Lopez and Javier Farinos.

In his first season at Valencia, Baraja flourished with his accurate passing and strength helping him earn his first cap for the national side.

He was also part of the Los Che side that reached the Champions League final only to lose to Bayern Munich on penalties.

Despite being sidelined for large parts of the 2001/2002 season, his contribution on his return from injury helped Valencia clinch the title and under Rafael Benitez, Baraja's stock continued to rise as Los Che stormed to another La Liga title and the UEFA Cup.

His form dipped markedly during Claudio Ranieri's short reign in charge but with the appointment of Quique Sánchez Flores, the midfielder has been back to his committed best.

Baraja has enjoyed less success with the national side and has endured early exits from the last two major tournaments with Spain.
