Senderos - strong in the tackle.
4 Philippe Senderos

Position: Defender
Born: 14.02.82
Club: Arsenal

Thought of in parts as one of the finest young defenders in Europe, Philippe Senderos is expected to provide Switzerland's backbone in their attempt to shake off the tag of tournament pushovers.

The imposing centre-back, who only made his international debut last March in the 0-0 draw with France, managed to score a vital goal for Switzerland in their play-off against Turkey which they won by virtue of the away goals rule.

Senderos' swift rise to the top began in July 2003 when he signed for Arsenal from home-town club Servette. But it was not until the following season when he finally made his mark as he established himself in the Gunners' squad.

He proceeded to step in for the injured Sol Campbell towards the end of the season but his solid displays meant the experienced England defender could not regain his place for Arsenal's FA Cup final victory over Manchester United.

This season Senderos has continued his development in the heart of the defence and has been tipped as a future captain for both club and country.

A confident defender, much is expected Senderos, whose giant frame gives Switzerland a strong presence at the back.
