Position: Midfielder Johann Vogel is Switzerland's captain and-most capped player and after making his way through the European club ranks is gaining invaluable experience at the top level with AC Milan. He began his professional career at Grasshopper Zurich, where he played mainly as a centre-back or at right-back and it was only when he moved to PSV Eindhoven in 1999 that he became a defensive midfielder full-time. The reliable midfielder has been part of the Swiss national team for an incredible 11 years, making his debut at the age of 18 and becoming captain at the age of 22. Vogel's first major tournament was Euro 96 and he was also involved eight years later in Portugal, where he was sent off in the first group game after being instrumental in their qualification for the tournament. In the 2004/2005 season Vogel was part of a hugely effective midfield trio with Mark van Bommel and Philip Cocu that helped PSV to the Champions League semi-finals. Milan were suitably impressed and took him to the San Siro that summer, but he has struggled to work his way into a regular starting position although he was linked with Manchester United in January. An accurate passer who keeps possession well, Vogel is also defensively strong.
