An athletic defender who can play in central defence or at left-back, Cory Gibbs was sweating on his World Cup place right up until Bruce Arena named his final squad.

A knee injury sustained in the friendly against England last May meant the 26-year-old, who will play for Charlton in the English Premiership next season, had to have two operations and even though he returned for a match against Germany in March he could still not be sure of his place in the 23-man party.

But it appears his efforts in the Eredivisie for ADO Den Haag - who he joined after being released by Feyenoord just a year at the club - convinced Arena of his fitness.

A product of Brown University, Gibbs signed for St Pauli in 2001 and went on to be a regular for the German side before returning to the US with Dallas two years ago.

He had made his international debut in 2003 while in Germany and appeared in seven of the US' qualifiers for this tournament.
